0VI. overall history Isaac Kirkland was born in the recently established state of Tennessee to a poor pioneer family. Isaac and his older brother George were taught to hunt at an early age to help feed themselves and defend their home along with their father from Indians. The boys grew quickly, and were exposed to the many different people traveling Avery's Trace. In the summer of 1803, a Blacksmith family that was traveling Avery's Trace had stopped to rest at the Kirkland cabin. In exchange for shelter, the Blacksmith promised to take the oldest son, George, as an apprentice to learn an honest trade. The Kirklands agreed, and established a longtime friendship between the two families.
Isaac, however, had to remain and help support his parents, becoming a guide to those traveling Avery's Trace. He learned much of the land and was at home in the wilderness, content with his life until the war of 1812. Isaac joined the Tennessee militia at the age of 22 and followed Colonel Andrew Jackson through the Creek War, and the Battle of New Orleans, where he learned his proficiency with the Tomahawk and knife. Isaac returned home in 1815 and resumed his work as a guide with his father along Avery's Trace until 1817, when he joined the Army to fight the First Seminole War at 27 years old. The conflict only lasted a year, however, and the idle Army life bored Isaac to the point of returning home illegally.
Isaac could not stay with his parents, as the Army would most likely be looking to imprison him for abandoning his post. He gave his parents all his wages earned fighting wars and left to live the simple life of a frontiersman at age 28. Isaac spent the next 13 years exploring America and Canada, living off the land and hunting dangerous game. At age 41, Isaac realized that of all the Britons he had killed during the war, he had never once wondered about the place they called home. With nothing to dissuade him, Isaac traveled to the nearest port on the Eastern coast and jumped on the next ship to Britain. When he finally arrived, Isaac began traveling the countryside to explore the British frontier.
